"You demonstrate a good sense of graphic storytelling and [SMOKING
GUNS] holds promise...I believe you will be producing some really
good books. I urge you to keep at it." - WILL EISNER, Artist-Writer, Author - COMICS & SEQUENTIAL ART
"If you love '40s film noir and detective yarns, then M.L.WALKER'S
SMOKING GUNS is definitely the story for you! Even though the story takes
place almost forty years in the future, the elements and problems faced by our
protagonists, private eyes Colt Walker, Jr. and Charlie Chambers, are timeless.
After all, blackmail, deception, and betrayal are the same in any era. M.L. masterfully
weaves together a tale of action, adventure, and mystery combined with humor,
reality, and fun." - JEN CONTINO, SEQUENTIAL
TART
"SMOKING GUNS reads as if the creators of Chassis decided
to write a film noir...Smoking Guns takes the old 1940s detective story
and places it in the future. I know that sounds like Blade Runner, but this is
a lot less pessimistic work. SMOKING GUNS is a fun, irreverent mixing
of two different genres in a way that I found to be a lot of fun." - BARB LIEN-COOPER, SEQUENTIAL
TART
"I thought I had this title pegged before I opened it -- An indie title,
with a lot of shooting and violence, lots of blood, a lot of testosterone... maybe
kind of noir...Well I was WRONG. By the time I was halfway through, I was really
fond of this comic, and that opinion didn't change at the end... it's exciting
and absorbing and I kind of got into it, frankly. I liked the story, the pacing,
and the characterization...this comic is better constructed than most mainstream
comics. " - PARK COOPER, SILVER
BULLET COMICS
"[SMOKING GUNS: ONE SHOT is] a very amusing one shot book from
RICOCHET GRAPHICS with the entire title written and drawn by one M. L. Walker.
Colt and Charlie are typical detective heroes:
young, brash, cocky, have frequent brushes with the law and they dress like
it's 1939 instead of 2039. Also, for a Black and White one shot, Walker manages
to imbue quite a bit of life and vitality into his plot and characters. The
artwork is also surprisingly well-done for a black and white book: great perspective,
very expressive and active, clean lines and good lettering.
GUNS may not have been a perfect
detective story, coming from the point of view of someone who's read hundreds
of them, but it's a highly enjoyable and exceptionally well done small press
comic and I hope Walker plans a follow up adventure for his crime busting duo.
While GUNS also contains violence, the light tone of the story
and humorous characters still make it accessible for mainstream audiences. I
enjoyed this book. " - DENNIS KININGER, President, ORCA
