The Story Behind the Story-
It makes me laugh
that there are those of you actually reading these pages. That's pretty
neat...!
HYPER-REVOLUTION is the product of a hyperactive imagination
and started off as an itch in my brain during the time that I worked on
the illustrations for the BABES OF ACID promotion. Maybe it's because
I had spent the time immersing myself in imagery associated with some
of my favorite CoA members, or maybe it's just because I'm crazy -- but
I found myself preoccupied with strong visual depections of some of the
Children. And it just wouldn't stop.
I grew up creating comic-books, and for me visuals have to somehow be
associated with a narrative. This was no different. I thought about it
and more and more specific moments would come to me, ever-so-loosely connected
by the barest concept for a story. And I couldn't help but think to myself:
"You know, this would make one kick-ass animated series!"
At the time I was also watching the digitally-animated SPIDER-MAN
series on MTV and it occurred to me my idea couldn't be all THAT far off.
Why not? Stranger things have been making their way onto the airwaves
every day. (Have you seen VENTURE BROTHERS on Cartoon Network lately?
Now that's some weird stuff.) And once I start plucking ideas out
of the ether there's just no controlling it. I really liked this idea.
A Children of Acid-based animated series. It was clever.
But there was nowhere to go with it really. CoA isn't mine and I don't
have the first idea about pitching an animated series to a network. So
I just kept it all to myself.
But the ideas wouldn't stop coming.
Jump to last October when for the first time I started writing down some
of the loose thoughts I'd had regarding this orphan of an idea. It started
making more and more sense as I did. The tapestry of characters and circumstances
actually wove the fabric of a plot. I mulled over it some more and realized...I
could write a novel. Again, why not? You think of novels as something
other more learned, studious people decide to do. An endeavor no normal
person undertakes without proper research, planning and pedigrees.
Screw that. I don't like being hemmed in by preconceptions. It seemed
like fun, and I like to surprise people with new projects. Besides, no
one in recent memory has accused me of being normal anyway.
And you know something? It really has been fun. Sometimes it would just
dawn on me how a character could be introduced here or what Acid-spawned
powers a character could exhibit there and I'd just go giddy with excitement.
I figure, if you can't get excited about a project, what's the point in
undertaking it?
As I see it, every Child featured in H-R is a combination
of elements. There's the online fiction of a screen-persona, which if
you pay attention you'll quickly see is usually completely different from
the actual person underneath. The screen-name is like an amplified or
hyper-realized version of the person who uses it. For me it's a treat
getting to know the people beneath the personas...but I have to admit,
there's something cool about the mystique of the persona
too. I like being able to combine parts of both, coming up with something
brand new and yet hopefully instantly recognizable at the same time.
I try not to include people who I think are going to get bent out of shape
by the manner in which they're included. Everything here is done in the
spirit of good fun. That said, I'm taking some liberties with characterization
and such, so all I can ask is that the selected few understand that this
is just my own interpretation of them set against a fantastic backdrop
of revolution and interstellar awakening.
When you fuse music with the potential for evolution...that's when you
can feel the Acid start to burn. For me, that burning began as an itch
in the deepest recesses of my imagination, and now you get to see the
results play out twice a week on this site and on CoA. All I can do is
thank everyone again for providing such rich, amazing inspiration for
a pedigreeless soul like myself to work his magic with.
The ideas just keep on coming.
